Nicki Minaj got candid in a new cover interview with US Vogue this week, letting fans get a glimpse into her life with husband Kenneth Petty and their son "Papa Bear".
In the interview, Minaj explained what drew her to Petty.
“We make each other laugh," she said.
"We’re silly. And we’re always reminiscing about some old story."
It is no secret that their relationship has been heavily criticized.
Petty is a registered sex offender who was convicted of attempted rape in 1994.
He was also convicted of manslaughter and spent many years in prison, also serving time under house arrest for failing to register as a sex offender and recent threats issued to rapper Offset.
The Vogue interview did not address Petty's controversial background. Minaj however explained she trusted him because he had loved her before her fame.
"If it was a guy that I met as Nicki Minaj, I think I’d feel like they liked me because I’m Nicki Minaj, and what if I don’t look like Nicki Minaj every day? And that, combined with pregnancy, would probably have made me crazy.”
Minaj said the birth of their son presented some challenges and things "got testy" between them as they navigated parenthood.
“Because of our history, I think we knew we’d get past it,” she said.
She added that becoming a mother influenced her music.
"I would always tell people, 'Watch, when I have a child I'm going to cook every meal for him and bake cookies every day.' Maybe subconsciously I hoped my focus would just be on being a mother, and I looked forward to that idea. It felt like a relief. But what happens is that you find out you have to work," she said.
She recalled a story about a stay-at-home mom who felt unfulfilled as a homemaker but felt guilty when she started to work again.
"I was like, OMFG. She felt guilt when she was doing the perfect homemaker thing, and guilt as a working mom when she missed a moment in their lives. Maybe God let that lady say that to me because it made me think, 'Well, if I'm going to have mom guilt regardless, I might as well continue doing the only thing I know how to freaking do, which is make music."
Minaj also spoke on body positivity and regretting plastic surgery in a Vogue video interview.
Though she didn't go into specifics about what procedures she has undergone, said she "could not believe" she did not like the way she looked in old photos.
"I guarantee you, if you change anything on your body and do anything surgical and all this, you're going to — more than likely, not definitely, more than likely — look back one day and say, 'I was fine just the way I was. And that's what happened to me."
She added:
"But today I can say that I’m at peace with who I am and how I look. I have to say this as a Black woman, though."
Minaj however said she does not support unhealthy bodies.
"I’m not in favor of body positivity if it means unhealthy bodies," she stated.
"That’s bull. It’s not believable, so let’s stop pretending. Recently I had to get a breast reduction, and actually I love it. I used to want a bigger butt, and now I look back and realize how silly that was. So—love your curves and love your non-curves. There’s nothing wrong with any of it.”
