Missy Elliott visits hometown and donates $50000 to families in need.
Rapper Missy Elliott went back to her hometown of Portsmouth VA, on Tuesday for it's second annual Missy Elliot Day.
Last year Governor Yanin declared that October 17th, every year in the Commonwealth of Virginia is Miss Elliot Day.
Last year the day was celebrated at Manor High School, welcomed by a huge crowd to celebrate with Missy as the day was declared, and it's local McQueen Street was renamed to Miss Elliott Boulevard.
A dope honor to say the least.
This year the Portsmouth native, and Grammy award winning artist wanted to give back by donating $50,000 to the community. Specifically to it's local housing authority. This will help 26 local families who are past due with their rent stay in their homes.
One local resident who is expecting said she actually had an eviction date set for court later this month and had no plan, and was almost forced to move her, and her children in with her mother to stay afloat, but that Missy's surprise donation will help her out a lot, and means a lot to her.
It means just as much to Missy who say's she did it because she knows what it feels like being in that situation.
She told one news outlet "For me who has been in a situation like that with my mother, a single mother, that's what made it important, because you know, cause I feel like I can relate to a place of being where you don't know where you're going next."
Missy's mother Patricia was along for the visit and had this to say. "when you give back to your home, uh and the city that you're in, it does something for her and I know that". Said with a big smile full of pride.
During her speech Missy say's "I wanted to give back and that be the celebration of Missy Elliot day so just to show that I love everybody here I love my city".
She also had this to say... " I just want y'all to know that I am grateful I have been blessed to be able to travel the globe, but just know that P town is always with me no matter where I go."
Congratulations Missy!! She's having a great year!
