JT of the City Girls aspired to be "an athlete's girlfriend" before becoming a rapper
JT from the City Girls is getting candid in a new interview for Interview Magazine.
The "No Bars" rapper was interviewed by Kali Uchis on a variety of topics, including what she looks for in men.
JT, real name Jatavia Johnson, admitted that she always aspired to be the girlfriend of somebody rich and famous, preferably an athlete.
She firmly believes that men should financially support their partners.
"Growing up in Miami is crazy. My surroundings was like that. My mom was like that. My aunt was like that. My dad got eight baby mamas, and he was like that.
He gave them money," she said.
She said her "tricking and finesse" music was inspired by this lifestyle.
"I don’t want it to be perceived the wrong way, but unapologetically, I feel like every woman deserves to be taken care of," she added.
"But in my community, it’s like, “Oh, you a trick, you a ho, you a user.”
Kali Uchis agreed, saying women should not have sex with men who aren't doing anything for them financially.
"Like, you’re giving the milk for free, why would they buy the cow?"
JT, who is now dating rapper Lil Uzi Vert, however said she knew she had the talent to be more than a rich man's girlfriend.
"I’ve been having these little talks with myself. I know I could get on these levels because I have the talent, but I’m not really in my own space to the point that I’m nominated, and those are things I want to see for myself."
JT also addressed colorism in the industry and how it affected her as a dark-skinned black woman.
"I see it all the time. If you are too dark of a shade, it’s not good enough, it’s not marketable to people."
She also addressed the unflattering mugshots of her that have been in the public domain and said she had never been called ugly until she came in the music industry.
"Because growing up I always been the shit. Do not get me wrong. You could go to my Facebook. Do not let them mugshots fool you. But now to be able to afford the best makeup and the best stuff means everything to me. Because before the industry, I never got the, “You ugly,” until I got in the industry."
JT expressed optimism for the future of her music career saying she was happy to see her Spotify listeners increasing.
She said the City Girls new album would likely be released this month and her solo EP would be coming in early 2024.
