Megan Thee Stallion addressed "pressure" for new Cardi B collaboration "Bongos" to be as big as "WAP"
Megan Thee Stallion's and Cardi B's newest collboration has not been as massive a hit as their previous collaboration "WAP" but Megan Thee Stallion is making it clear that she does not care.
In a new interview with ET, Megan said she makes music for fun and not for charts.
Her comments come after fans of Nicki Minaj labeled Bongos a "flop" for debuting at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100.
While many aritsts would love to achieve a #14 hit, the expectation is higher for Megan and Cardi B, and understandably so.
After all, WAP broke a multitude of records including being the first female rap song to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill's Doo Wop in 1998. WAP broke sales and streaming records, launched a worldwide conversation and is widely regarded as the last "cultural reset" in female rap.
As a result, there was an expectation that the new collaboration would live up to or surpass WAP's achievements.
Bongos however fell short of that expectation.
When asked about the pressure to surpass WAP, Megan said she never has any expectations for her music.
"I don't really care about charts and stuff like that. Obviously, everybody wanna be #1, everybody wants to win, everybody wants to give their fans these bragging rights.
"But I make music because I love to make music, so I'm not making it like, "Oh I gotta top this" or "Oh, we have to be better than the last time." I'm like, "No we're gonna make a song because we like to make music and it's gonna be fun!
"It doesn't have to be the same vibe. (WAP) was already its great, own moment. It served its purpose at that time. That was two, three years ago. We two different women now. So this is different."
Megan said she was not expecting Bongos to be anything like WAP. She added that the world is now out of the Covid-19 pandemic and its time to loosen up and have fun.
"It's time for everybody to be in a good mood. It's time for everybody to feel a different way. I was so excited when Cardi sent me this song because I had never recorded over a beat like that before. I never rapped to anything like that, and I felt like it was a challenge."
