Ice Spice says female rappers are "bitches behind the scenes"
Is female rap unity a farce? Well, Ice Spice seems to think so.
In a recent interview with Variety, the redhead rapper called out her peers who she hinted pretend to be all about unity but are actually "bitches" behind the scenes.
She said she views the industry as a competitive sport.
“It is a competition at the end of the day. People want to be all ‘I’m a girl’s girl,’ but then behind the scenes being bitches."
She said that all the girls are doing "amazing" but "secretly enjoy" competing for views and attention.
She added that she keeps a close eye on her competition.
"I can be transparent, and I know the competition is checking on me too, which is why it’s OK to say that. Because it’s like, ‘Yeah, girl, I’m watching you and I know you watching me.’ And boys are watching too, because they be secretly haters.
"But everybody today is competing with everybody no matter if you a boy, girl, nonbinary, whatever it is. You still checking in on your competition. That’s in every industry.”
Ice Spice's comments come at a time when female rappers have been, for the most part, putting on a united front.
There has never been an era with so many mainstream and up-and-coming female rappers out at the same time.
This new wave of female rappers came after the debut of Cardi B as many credit her with being the one to end the relative drought of female rappers in the decade before her.
Girls are now getting attention like never before and have been collaborating and featuring on each other's songs, leading to genuine friendships.
But according to Ice Spice, it's probably all fake.
