The Recording Academy found itself at the center of controversy after a mix-up involving Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice during the Grammy Awards.
A premature announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter) named them winners of Best Rap Song, causing a stir among fans.
This error occurred during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony, where most awards are handed out.
The actual sweep of the rap categories was by Killer Mike, including Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Album for his work on "Scientists & Engineers" from his album "Michael," featuring notable artists André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.
The competition for Best Rap Song featured tracks from Doja Cat, Lil Uzi Vert, Drake and 21 Savage, and a collaboration between Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and Aqua for "Barbie World" from Barbie the Album.
The Recording Academy corrected their mistake shortly after, confirming Killer Mike as the rightful winner.
Journalist Ernest Owens, present at the event, confirmed that there was no confusion during the actual announcement, pointing to a social media error as the source of the mix-up.
This incident particularly disappointed fans of Nicki Minaj, who has yet to win a Grammy despite multiple nominations. The blunder led to speculation and accusations of bias against Minaj, with some fans suggesting it was an intentional act to undermine her.
Minaj has previously expressed grievances with the Recording Academy, criticizing their categorization of her music and their decision-making process, notably regarding her single "Super Freaky Girl."
Her outspokenness highlights ongoing tensions with the Grammy's handling of her work, including her criticism of the Best New Artist award process in 2012, underscoring her significant impact on the music industry despite the lack of Grammy recognition.
Earlier this month, Forbes magazine penned an article titled "Nicki Minaj Has Never Won A Grammy—That Probably Won’t Change This Year".
Where Senior Contributor Hugh McIntyre writes: "Minaj is one of the most-nominated musicians without a Grammy win. She’s accrued a dozen nods, but somehow, she’s never walked away with a trophy."
Seems he was right as Nicki didn't win any of her nominations this year.
Maybe she'll have better luck next year with PF2?
